During each game of Texas Hold’em, each participant receives two cards that only they can see. The dealer then reveals five shared cards in stages in the center of the table. Players use any combination of their two private cards and the shared cards to form their strongest five-card poker hand. 


During each round, players can choose to bet, match another player’s bet, raise the amount, or leave the hand (aka: Fold). After the final shared card appears and the betting is complete, the remaining players reveal their cards. The player with the best hand wins the chips from that game. Then another game starts.

Texas Hold'em tournaments are competitive poker events where players pay a one-time entry fee (buy-in) to receive a set amount of non-cash tournament chips. Players compete until they lose all their chips. Blinds and antes escalate at set time intervals, forcing action until one player accumulates all the chips. [1, 2, 3, 4] 


The ultimate goal is to survive and outlast the rest of the field to finish "in the money" (typically the top 10% to 15% of entrants), securing the largest share of the prize pool. [1, 2, 3, 4]


The fundamental mechanics that define how these events work include: 

1. The Starting Stack and Blinds

  • Starting Chips: Every player starts with the same number of chips (e.g., 10,000, 20,000, etc.). These chips represent your tournament life, not monetary value. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • Blind Levels: To prevent players from simply waiting for premium hands, the forced bets (Small Blind and Big Blind) increase at regular intervals. [1, 2] 

2. Elimination and the Money Bubble 

  • Elimination: Once a player loses all their chips, they are knocked out of the event. 
  • The Bubble: This is the tense phase right before the tournament pays out the remaining players. For example, if 100 people enter and the top 15 get paid, the 16th-place finisher is the "bubble boy" and leaves with nothing. Once the bubble bursts, every remaining player is guaranteed a cash payout. [1] 

3. Common Tournament Formats 

  • Freezeout: The most traditional format; once you lose all your chips, you are permanently eliminated. [1] 
  • Rebuy/Add-on: Allows players to purchase additional chips if they lose their stack within a specific early timeframe (rebuy), or add a flat amount of chips at the first break (add-on). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] 
  • Bounty / Knockout: A portion of your buy-in goes towards a bounty on your head. If you eliminate another player, you win their bounty cash immediately. [1, 2]

4. Payout Structure

The prize pool is formed by taking the total buy-ins minus the "rake" (the fee the casino/host takes to run the event). The remaining prize pool is distributed based on a predetermined payout schedule, with the 1st place winner taking the largest single payout.
